2014 Brighton - dalek details

Wednesday 12th February 2014

The major change this year dalekwise was the re-construction of a new dalek. Ashley decided to use an old dalek middle he found in his garden (yes, honestly) and slat it in the style of Death to the Daleks, as 2014 marks the fortieth year anniversary of that Jon Pertwee story. And we are all Jon Pertwee fans as you may imagine! Here's some of the construction...

The base and neck rings were off one of the other Devious daleks, whilst the middle section was a rescued piece duly sanded and repainted and reslatted. The dome was a spare one cast from the new dalek dome mould but deemed a failure. It was made we think in 2012 or 13 but junked. Great to see it had a new use. This new dalek also had a choice of weapons - the original black gunstick as per the story, with a newly built machine gun replica. This was made from a tube of perspex although Ashley does want to turn it from aluminium one day!
Here's the middle with tape deputising for slats for alignment purposes. These slats were built quite chunkily in case kids etc want to be too enthusiastic at shows etc, although they are only a couple of mm thicker than the originals. The eye was a new build using an existing stick, and there were also a choice of plunger arm created (two lengths). The "ears" were the original vehicle glass originals, and were of the clear variety - the original story having both clear and orange types.
All in all a fun addition to the fleet - doubtless it will stay in this colour scheme for a while, although the Devious (/Evil, Power) colour scheme can be replaced very easily since the original middle is hanging on a hook awaiting its return, and the original eyestalks lurk in a box somewhere... And it did look good in line (although in this picture there is some paint needed on the plunger sphere where it meets the arm - item to rectify!)...
... and here it is again out and about...
